The tires are like big apple. Some of the paths I rode I would not have been able to ride without a big back tire of 2.1". It grips and they dig themselves out. Nowhere did I get stuck. The front tires are more regular size (Marathon Winter). So far it feel perfectly safe. My concern with smaller tires or dub free tires is that I will slide on curves. Even with 3 wheels I am concerned to ride off the street.
The suggestion to compact the snow might lead to "steps" being created when transitioning between the bike path to the street crossing. When the snow starts melting then the real problems come when trenches are created in case of freezing temperatures after half melted paths.
