I recall that in mid 90s, when recumbents were for a while verbotten @ VR, there was a young American scientist by the name of Charles something, who rode VR on a recumbent concurrently with, but independently of the race event. Which, after all, is held on public roads. He carried all his water and bike supplies, and did not rely on pit stops maintained by the organizers. They tried to stop him, but couldn't. His account of the ride must've been published in (Mats Nilsson's) Trampkraft. Later on, he studied for a while in Olso, where he rode a canopied Rhoades 4-wheeler as a bike taxi there. His lowest gear was 10" and "he used it a lot" ;-))
