Replying to myself. A quick seach for "ecc_.*_itch" on http://codesearch.debian.net/results/ shows no matches outside of nettle (and there's no safe way to use the functions in questions without calling the corresponding itch function). So I wouldn't expect any problems with removing all of this from the public header.
