In the novelisation, and the original script, the room was blown up -
but it never made it to the screen so the basement cavern was presumably
still accessible. In fact, if you listen to all the remarks between
Dorian & Avon, it adds another twist to the "Avon goes mad in s4"
theory. The room "accepts" Avon; it affects/controls Dorian ("By now I
probably would be"), etc. Perhaps not all the "madness & rotting
corruption" settled back on Dorian when the creature was destroyed.
I always wondered what the consequences would be if Avon had managed to
get the barely-alive Blake back to the cavern (So what if Blake's not
moving and the base is destroyed? No problem).
