I usually think of it lasting about five years all told, roughly eighteen months between Way back and Star One, and likewise between Star One and Blake. Between episodes they get on with ordinary life - as much as it can be 'ordinary', or have adventures that just didn't happen to be recorded by the Beeb. Some episodes are clearly separated by a fair length of time, when they're off doing other things, like DoG, where Tarrant promises Groff to take a message to his family on Zaranah. (ot)Shades of Gauda Prime!

The last STARGATE SG-1 episode of the season aired last night, 'Meridian', and writers Malozzi and Mulley finally got their secret wish. They've been progressively downplaying the lead character Daniel Jackson for the past 2 years since they took over scripting duties on the show, and last night, they killed him off. The show hasn't aired anywhere but the UK yet, but the SG-1 fans are going utterly berserk. They jammed MGM's phone lines here in the US with overseas calls so badly that no one can get through to the studios, and a rebellion seems to be erupting to get the writers fired and have the actor brought back (he quit over the treatment of his character). It ought to be very interesting at WOLFCON in London, this weekend; Michael Shanks is the top guest and there are going to be a lot of upset attendees. I'm glad Annie and I will be there... Leah

Crew Meals

Canon is not very forthcoming on the subject of food (although we know that actual fruit and coffee beans do exist, but as rare luxuries, that nutrient packs exist, and that Vila knows what Avon means when he refers to a sandwich). Terran farming is probably a bad idea because of radiation contamination, but there probably are hydroponic farms. But there are agricultural planets (see Star One). I figure that there are lots of kinds of food analogs to supplement whatever fresh foods can be obtained. (There are also distilleries to make green booze.) The assumption I use in writing fanfic is that on the Liberator, there are regular sit-down meals for the crew, and that everyone has to take turns cooking and washing up (although this degree of civilized amenity has probably broken down on Scorpio and maybe on Xenon Base). In a way this is irrational--they couldn't all be awake at the same time--but I think Blake would insist on it as a means of instilling group cohesion. I think the others would also find it reassuring, although several of them wouldn't admit it. Nova figures that they heat things up for themselves in advanced microwave ovens...but that doesn't seem very companionable. I've seen plenty of stories involving "pleasure planets" but somehow no one except me seems worried about where you can find a really good restaurant on shore leave... -(Y)

Dayna would try to get involved but would be baffled ("The object of the game is _what_? A hat trick? What hat? And what does the quaffle have to do with it?"). Cally would simply be appalled at the violence ("My people have a saying: any game with frequent head injuries should only be played by idiots who don't have anything left to lose" [Vila: "Oh, that's not the players, Cally. This game's really nonviolent. You're watching the fans"]). Orac would wind up quietly designing a bookie subroutine. Blake and Gan cook simple meat and 2 veg meals; Avon cooks gourmet food (although regrettably for palates inferior to his); Vila cooks curries, pizzas, felafels, and grilled cheese on toast (all vegetarian--he can't stand the sight of blood and the idea of touching dead flesh gives him the willies); Jenna doesn't go to much trouble--it's stew or soup and if you don't like it then you can go hungry; Cally cooks healthy low-fat meals for the crew's own good but binges on cakes, biscuits, and anything she can get her hands on in between (she's bulimic); Dayna grills meat in the absence of an outside fire and serves it with salad; Tarrant likes a good fry-up--steaks, sausages, chips; Soolin hasn't done much cooking although she secretly remembers her family's good farm meals with nostalgia--she does roasts and stews which are hard to get wrong, and she can't be bothered with fiddly sauces like the ones Avon does. > In a way > this is irrational--they couldn't all be awake at > the same time I think most would be. There are 5 of them (6 when Gan was there), and I have them on an Terran 'day' and 'night'. If they rotate through 3 8-hour shifts, only one is on at night, so most would be awake at the same time. Only the person on watch would be missing from a meal. Oh, I am too! The Lib had enough food for decades ('Horizon'?), but they must have wanted to shop for fresh vegs and unusual items they craved. Of course, the Lib was probably capable of storing fresh food indefinitely with its advanced technology, so they may well have had lots of fruit, vegs, fresh bread in some sort of stasis. I think they did. But they'd still have to shop for it now and then. I can imagine some would regard it as a chore, others would welcome the nice safe break from the ship. I have at least 6 meals at dirt-side restaurants in Vila's e-mails, and also have them making frequent shopping trips from Xenon base for food and other supplies.
