Before I begin, let me say that Anna's writing I have seen is very very good, and if it took no effort I am lime, olive and emerald green with envy :-) The following comments are only about the way I find the whole process, which is somewhere in between all the views I've read so far. I wrote primarily for me, true. My B7 focus is character intereaction, and fairly narrowly based - Blake and Avon first (there aren't, of course, *nearly* enough A-B stories in the world) with Vila next and the rest scattered somewhere behind. Simply letting one's imagination run is wonderful fun (not least of all because one can skip the need for rotten plotty bits and simply play with the good stiuff :-)) as is scribbling it down on my hard drive where no one but me will see it - pure and unabashed self-indulgence and nothing wrong with that. As I've said before, the buzz when someone else enjoys what I've written is wonderful in itself, as a separate thing from the pleasure of imagining the whole thing. But if they're going to enjoy it, they need those things I'm not so good at, they need a plot, they need clarity in the allusions I seem to throw in, they need something other than 5 pages of My Darlings playing complicated word games for my amusement :-) And *I* need it to be at least competent and coherent enough that it won't cover me with mortification <g> something that is not necessary when it's hidden in my head. The work can be enormous fun in itself, of course - like that 'ah hah!' when you think of a way to justify keeping in a piece of prose that *ought* to be pruned for the story's sake but which you love is nice - but then you still have to get it down in words that - if you do want to share it - someone else is going to appreciate as well. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com

Tell the truth, I've nearly given up watching new SF stuff, although I do occasionally dip into Farscape. Mainly because it's so hard keeping up when you work alternating shifts. I'm glad I first saw B7 as a teenager when it first came out. If it was showing today, I'd probably have missed it. And at least it was shown on mainstream TV. I have recently come to a pause in my writing about the female characters and could do with a new topic. In choosing, please avoid the following names: Jenna, Cally, Soolin, Dayna, Rashel, Veron, Sinofar, Arlen. As for who I write for, I write B7 fic for the characters (I sometimes view the cosmos as a character), who deserve to be read and written about. The plot and its devices, adjectives and adverbs, the reader and the writer - these are secondary to the characters. DC

I love Lexx, but admit the quality is sometimes variable. The four one-and-a-half-hour episodes that made up season one were excellent. Season two is a mix of good and bad episodes, including one absolutely brilliant episode. I found season three dragged a bit, stretching the one story line over too many episodes, but I liked it better when I watched it again and knew I was on a marathon rather than an episodic adventure. People really write stories just for themselves? I feel baffled-- writing is hard work, whereas picturing things in my head is easy, and can be done in endless variations. I write only in order to be read. The self-insertion fic in the Harry Potter universe would actually be made much more difficult because I have to write it for the other two people I'm inserting... if it was just me, I'd change the name and no one would know, but this would actually be a collaboration, making things much more complex, and then there is the question of would anyone else want to read it. I really don't want to bother committing to paper that which does not have an audience. So, tell me, why does a peerson write it out if they don't care if anyone reads it? As a record of their imaginings? I'm seriously curious.

Haircuts

I just got to thinking, who cut their hair? I'd vote for Cally. You know the old story about, if there are only two barbers in town, go to the one with the bad haircut since the other guy's the one who had to have done it? Can't you just see Cally, after months in the wild with no decent conditioner and sure she's overloaded with split ends, getting one of the others to trim it for her with, er, memorable results? Other questions this raises. What security steps would Avon take before letting anyone stand behind him with sharp scissors? Who did Cally get to trim hers? I ask only because more than one culture has felt there was something flirtatious about a woman letting a man touch her hair and I'm anxious (as always) to get as much as I can out it of these little debates. But would even Blake have suggested Avon could learn brain surgery on the fly when Gan had the limiter breakdown if this was what happened the last time someone let him near their head with a sharpened instrument? When I write, I consider it 'work', whereas the day to day job I do is merely for money, if you get my meaning. I find myself writing much less at weekends because Saturday and Sunday are 'rest days', while during the week, before and after my shifts at the factory where I earn a living, I power up the PC and get down to pinning my imagination to disk.(It used to be paper, but a friend persuaded me to enter the 20th century, and I haven't looked back since.) Never having had an audience, my stories are chiefly an escape from mundane reality, but I find they do reflect my feelings and interests over the years, if somewhat obliquely. Looking back over things I've written, it's interesting to see what was pre-occupying me at the time, as filtered though what I concentrated on in my fic. My writings seem to constitute a kind of diary, without actually relating directly what was going on in my life at the time, yet they remind me of my feelings, etc. I write mainly because I love to do it, and in some way feel compelled to. I just wish I had sufficient talent to go pro, but I've learned to recognise the difference between reasonably good stories and those good enough to make it in the cut-throat world of publishing. I only wish I had a tenth of the originality or talent of some of the writers I've encountered in zines. I'll never stop writing for my own pleasure, but I've accepted I'll probably never be the novelist I'd like to have been.
