My friend warns against buying zero region players--at least, that is what I think she called them. Presumably some DVDs say they play every region and do not. There were a lot of problems involving DVD players which she was talking about, but I don't remember what all she said. She did say there was also some reason for waiting to buy a DVD player, too, because some new advancements might be made in the next year. The ACI DVD plays both region 1 and region 2. My friend says it's very easy to change the code by using the remote. She was just recommending to a bunch of us two weeks ago at a local (California) m/m slash fanclub party that we should all buy one since many of us like British TV series. She claims, and I have no clue if this is true or not, that we Americans, also, want to be able to play British DVDs because some of the British DVDs will have more information on them than the American ones. One of the series she mentioned where this would be true was Stargate. I personally find this hard to believe. I don't see why there would be differing amounts of information on a specific TV series depending what region the DVD is made for. I will be buying a multi-region DVD once it is for sure that B7 does come out on DVD. I'm not going to hold my breath. And then I will probably buy the multi-region ACI DVD player and ONE B7 DVD to make sure it does work before I invest in the entire series. Joyce

A true multi-region player is the way to go. Not only do the extras vary greatly depending on region (usually Region 1 do best, but not always), but sadly it's also cheaper to buy the things from amazon.com and have them shipped across the Pond than it is to buy from amazon.co.uk. Vila could probably only exist *in* a show like Blakes 7. He'd never make it aboard a ship manned in a more conventional way (desirable attributes for heroes not normally including scattiness, cowardice, selfishness and self-indulgence) but he is able to stay because - *being* as it is a small group of fighters - his skills and humour, the unconventional advantages he brings, outweigh those drawbacks (well, most of the time - I doubt Blake or Cally thought they did in Shadow :-)). And while it might be more sensible for him, as Leia says, to ask to be dropped off somewhere nice, it also makes sense that there doesn't seem to *be* anywhere that he thinks better than where he is (which, given his lack of enthusiasm for Fighting for Freedom in S1-2, and the company he is made to keep in S3-4, says something about what he came from, methinks). Maybe what they all came from. Time passing

Speaking as someone who saw the series on its first run, back when I was only a teenager, I sometimes feel sad when I watch B7, because so much time has passed. Here I sit, forty-one, older than Avon was at Gauda Prime, and I can't help thinking of all those who have gone before us, like Paul Daneman (Bellfriar), Ronald Lacey (Tynus), and so many others. What will our fandom be like in ten years time, or twenty? Will anyone still be interested? Will I be? We who were there at the beginning were very lucky, I think. I just wish I hadn't drifted away for so long, and missed so much. Blake's 7 is a part of the youth that has slipped away from me without me really noticing. In the same year as it began I was listening to The Jam's 'Setting Sons', and leaving school, and now I'm a factory worker, most likely till the day I retire. I wonder how the younger, newer fans will feel in twenty years time. Part of me loves B7 because it was part of my youth. I didn't have to make excuses for the dodgy sets and less-than-special effects - I had grown up watching 'Doctor Who', and it was just the normal thing. Newer fans must have tougher time of it, used to the glories of Babylon 5, Farscape and ST:TNG. They have to work a great deal harder to suspend their disbelief, something which we pretty much took for granted. I started watching it, oddly enough, because there was an informal "So, did you see Babylon 5 last night?" discussion group that happened during morning coffee at work. Someone mentioned that there was an old BBC series that was just as good, and lent me her tapes. Perhaps years of Doctor Who inured me to dodgy sets, but I think that B7 still stands on its own merits, in competition with SF series made today. It's a character-driven show, and (as I was thinking only the other day while watching 'Enterprise') Really Shiney FX don't provide character. Dodgy though they are, I have a certain fondness for the sets/SFX. It can be fashionable to knock them, but the designers and producers of the stuff were doing the best they could with very limited resources, and you have to admire them for trying so hard. And of course, this forced the writers to keep our attention on the characters by writing them so well. Mind you, I always think B7 is terrific for bangs. There's nothing like a really good explosion to add a bit of realism. Though I love Babylon 5, and watch ST in various flavours, I sometimes find myself longing for a wideswept quarry to make an appearance just to get the characters out of the studio into the fresh air.
