Just been watching The Web. This episode has a lot of problems. It strikes me as if someone came up with the plot, they got the costumes and the base together and forgot all about dialogue until the last minute and then just wrote it really quickly. The decimas are OK as aliens as are the two humanoids defrending the base. The last of the Lost is a really naff special effect, but I don't care about that; it works for what it is meant to be. As I said, my main problem is the lack of any good dialogue. This epsidoe is noted for its Avon-Blake interaction and has been used by many to hint at a closer realtionship between the two, but though the actions portray trust and comradeship, the dialogue doesn't. Even the last scene talking about change and so on had none of the hallmarks of later conversations between the two. I've always thought it a dull episode, but on re-watching I see, with a bit more thought and work, it had the potential to be up there among the best. The basis was a good idea. Research to modify people genetically accidentally creates a new race of thinking beings. Blake put in a dilemma of giving them the power to save the Liberator also gives them the power to destroy the decimas. Avon is typically very clear and can't understand Blake's reluctance. All good stuff. Sally Field-as-Avon opens up some additional possibilities (apart from "oh don't bother teleporting, I'll just fly my coif"). Maybe Blake is less worried about Avon running than standing on the teleport console holding a "Strike" sign...and maybe Avon's greatest fear is that he'll be possessed by the spirit of Gidget. SFX a while back did a comparison of space ships and stations' sizes based on info from the shows. There are a few rather neat echoes touches from the previous episodes, especially Cygnus Alpha: Jenna's "What if something should happen to you and we can't get you back?" is echoed this time by *Avon's* "What if something should happen to you and we can't get you back?" and they both seem to know it: the shift in the relationship means this time Blake is able to tease him (and 'tis gorgeous watching him :-) The best scene - that bit in the forest - is almost *all* in the acting; the way Blake *doesn't* react to Avon's "Even your irrational conscience should be able to cope with that," except for one slightly lifted eyebrow, which Avon reads perfectly, and *his* resigned "What do you want to do?" It's interesting. When you read the script, actually, you're more aware of Jenna's place as second lead at this stage (she has a large part in subduing Cally and she's clearly running the flight deck while Blake is gone) but when you *watch* it, Avon's already moved into that position on-screen (most of the memorable bits *are* after all A-B). Haven't written 'em, just thinking of 'em, Filks inspired by recent discussions.
