I may have taken this out of context, but Calle said that Lucy Lawless (Xena) was Australian. As a "kiwi" who knows that tall Lucy is in fact a New Zealander, I was most upset. Russell Crowe has a foot in both camps, being born in NZ and moving to ozzie and living there most of his life, that pretty much makes him ozzie. Lucy is most certainly "kiwi" however and as for the goldmining thing, well this is where I thought I may be out of context. Neil was mentioning accents. I guess in the case of Xena and Hercules these are for the most part, intended for US market demands and the US folk have more affinity with familiar accents. Besides, New Zealand accents would probably sound more peculiar. It is amusing seeing actors well known in NZ, having to "put on" a different voice though. It is amusing too that american accents carry less authenticity than proper British ones though. I recall an american actor saying how frustrating it was to do Shakespeare and then be seen as non-authentic because of the accent. he rightly pointed out that given the period you might be playing, ancient Rome for example, no-one would have been speaking in English public school system voices. nayte. --- I was never welcomed to the list either. But I never asked to be and given that most of the inhabitants are frequently deep in debate, I thought it safer to sit back and enjoy watching the light opera and make the occassinal quip. There are some excellent and interesting debates here. (Willow slaying to vampires when she, Giles and Xander are filling in for Buffy; Willow the witch can acheive more than Willow the geek). Buffy and Blake, hmm-- Buffy has been framed for crimes (charges later dropped). Eerie.

Cheryl, if you're still around-- you didn't say anything I thought needed to be defended or argued against, I suppose. I don't answer *MOST* posts, including those by people I'm very fond of. As I said to Mistral, usually the only replly I can make to her posts is the draful "Me, too" We don't generally do welcoming salutations on the list because we tend to be information-oriented people. If that strikes you as rude, you probably will be better off without us. If you want a conversation, the best way to start it is giving us a topic to chew on. Like, "Did Avon change from dull clothes to flashy duds because originally he was dressing to shelter himself from the other male prisoners on board the London? Or did the studs-and-leather look indicate embracing the more violent life of a guerilla rather than white-collar criminal?" I read all posts; I answer few, primarily because it takes a while to write.

Going Private?

In Horizon, Cally gives Vila a shot, he reacts with great pleasure, and she has to TELL him that it's adrenaline and soma--so presumably this is his first contact. Yet very shortly afterwards, when Cally reiterates to Blake that they need a rest, Blake says "What about the old adrenaline and soma?" and Cally says that they've "practically been living on it." What's this, then? Has Cally been dispensing a&s only to private patients, while denying it to Vila and Gan on the National Health? Or has Cally as HMO gatekeeper finally given Vila a referral? -(Y)

Fannishness & fanfiction

Like Neil, Blake's 7 is the only thing of which I'd call myself a fan. In my case I think there are two major elements: (1) the impressionable age at which I first saw the series (under 10) (2) the believable nastiness of the background, and its relevance to the here and now What I most like about the series is the characters, but there are plenty of series with similar believably mixed characters, and they haven't drawn me in in the same way. Why write fanfiction? In my case, purely because I saw good fanfiction on the web last April/May, and thought 'hey, I can do that!' and 'that looks like fun'. Probably nothing to do with the series at all, except that (IMO) it appears to spawn better fanfic, on average, than other series. I've not come up with an explanation for this observation. Tavia

I've never taken your posts to be trolling. I think what others see as trolling is a case of major frustration that comes from beating one's head against a brick wall. Which I can relate to. As a Tarrant fan, I've done a lot of that. And I know what's it like to be in the minority. I don't always agree with your opinions, but I'm always glad to see them. It's refreshing to see something other than the majority views. Carol
