More Penguin News....

Hey Guys, I meant to send this to the list a while ago. I got the following story from The New Yorker under the title of "Crouching Tiger, Trembling Penguins." (Apologies to Neil who has read this before.) Penguins in the Coney Island Zoo being stalked by feral cats. The penguins are trembling not so much from fear, but because they are jackass penguins and that is a biological quirk of theirs. Anyway, the zoo hired an exterminator to get rid of the cats -- but he proved upsetting to the nearby pro-cat neighbors who were disturbed by his evasive answer to the question of how he actually got rid of the cats. (He replied that he sent them to a friend of his in New Jersey who, um, "took care of them." I don't know if non-American readers can pick up on the obvious Mafia-like overtones to the reference to the friend in New Jersey here.) So, while the penguins of Antarctica are migrating to the beaches of Brazil (a story I heard about months ago on National Public Radio), penguins held captive in the land of the free cannot even tremble in peace for fear of being turned into cat food. Yeah, I know there's maybe a half inch difference, with Michael K. slightly taller than Paul D., but on the show, almost constantly, Vila is seen as a few inches shorter than Avon. I've heard Lucy Lawless speak a few times on Entertainment Tonight (American show hyping entertainment) and it's certainly not the way Xena speaks. I've read that Michael Hurst lived in England as a kid, then around age 9, his family moved to New Zealand, and he's worked in Kiwiland and Australia, so his accent is probably a bit different from the norm of London or New Zealand. Sorry, I'd never mistake a New Zealand accent for a Canadian accent. Canadian and American accents however, depending on one's locale, would sound astonishing similar. A New Yawker won't be mistaken for a Torontonian, but in general, Canadian and American accents are a lot closer, than American and New Zealand, or Canadian and New Zealand. To a Canadian, a New Zealand accent can easily be mistaken for a British one (I know; my mom's from New Zealand and she's often been asked where in Britain is she from). Anna

Look Small and Unthreatening, and people don't tend to bother you as much. Also, Michael Keating in 1991 looked quite buff in a T-shirt so I think Vila may have better mucles (all the better for second-story work and Running Away) than his outfits revealled.

Actually, I stopped watching when it got bogged down with Xena knowing she was fated to be crucified and trying to drive Gabby off to spare her. Blake's 7 can be dismal without being dull; most other shows don't pull it off as well. Maybe because the heroes *don't* accept Fate?

I think I've mentioned this before, actually, but my mother's reaction when I acquired said sticker was amusing: "You bought his picture? That arrogant *bastard*, and you bought his *picture*?!" I was really quite impressed. I hadn't thought she'd paid that much attention to the show. (Then again, IIRC, she *had* just seen "Orbit.") Come to think of it, that's possibly the only time I've ever heard my mother use the word "bastard." I take the character fairly seriously - I may not love him as I do My Darlings and Vila, but he's still fairly high on my list of favourite characters. I have my own quite complicated version of Tarrant, whom I like rather a lot and find an interesting study and *do* want to discuss occasionally (though the endless re-writes of the posts to try and bowdlerise the boy are a pain). I do, however, recognise that [a] it is mine and mine alone (isn't this true of every character?) even if I think it's backed up by evidence and [b] the fact that it *is* mine and I'm not demanding anyone else adopt it doesn't get recognised as often as I think it ought to. Hence the bowdlerisation (which I don't have to do with anyone else, not even Dayna) and hence the IMHO*only*. NB - I also rather like what I think is Steven Pacey's version, even if I disagree with his "'what personality?" on the 7fold-whatsit tape. Sometimes when I find versions being touted on the Lyst (and there's no reason why anyone else shouldn't tout their version) too sugary, I head back to the video to remind myself of it. I've also seldom liked fanfic versions, which seem to swing between Bitchy-Superjock-from-Hell (and not even good bitchiness, though he *has* a neat way with a verbal stiletto when he likes) and Sir-Galahad-in-Space, so sweet and virtuous and dutiful and noble and squeaky-clean that he makes my teeth ache (yes, there are similar version of both Avon and even Vila. *They* make my teeth ache as well). The fanfic Tarrant I've read that I found by far the best was by (again) Suzann Lovett in 'Doppelganger' - quite wonderful sharpness, glitter and speed. And final point - and yes, this is for Wendy as well as anyone else who hates my burbles or my version of B7 - feel free to killfile me. I'm trying to remember--I don't think I started by introducing myself. I think I began by responding to posts on-topic. Meyers-Briggs was the big thing that I came in on the end of and I got steered to the Keirsey site in response to my questions. A short while later I had *a lot* to talk about. I also was inclined to use the name of my B7-based role-playing character, Avona, for a nom-du-net, and wanted to har from those established on the list if that would sound conceited or be okay. In short, I was asking questions and provoking comment. I only got to know the people behind the names, as it were, very gradually. One thing we do like to share in the way of personal information is where people are based, generally and how you came to know the show. You may have mentioned these things, but it really only registers on my brain when it's the topic of general conversation. It's interesting to see how Blake's 7 has spread and how the introduction effects long-term biases-- I came in on 3rd season. There's a suggestion that people prefer the first Travis they see. So... My name is Helen, I'm from California, and I got hooked on the show while watching it broadcast from a PBS station in Orange County. Nice to have you with us, Cheryl.
