But remember, Servalan only took power after the war in a time of turmoil, beginning with intergalactic and possibly civil war (the rebellion on Earth wasn't crushed till just before Rumours), never appears to have been secure in her Presidency and was ousted after a very short period in power, just as or before the Federation started rebuilding. She *was* "President of a ruined empire", and spent too much time having to fight for her own position and chasing Our Heroes and the dreamship. She also took power in a coup and presumably killed the incumbent and his close circle, and would be aware of the dangers of 'being done by as you would do to others' - especially since there had been attempts on her life (Project Avalon) when she was Supreme Commander with all the pre-war military to protect her. There might be more safety (she's very concerned for her own attractive skin, remember) in keeping out of the public eye. It also doesn't appear that publicity is a big thing with the Powers-That-Be (her predecessor was pretty much faceless). Servalan was supposed to be dead, so most of the populace (who probably couldn't care less who was in the Presidential seat) wouldn't really notice or care very much, maybe just think "she looks like someone, just can't think who ..." This probably ties into the S4 clothes but, evidently, people in the B7 universe have the hardest time recognizing people once they've had a major wardrobe change. Apparently, when Servalan isn't wearing at least some white, she needs to tell people who she is. Hence, on Chenga, while wearing Dayna's clothes, she had to make a big fuss to get properly identified. As for S4, I suppose, after losing Liberator, the others wanted to a bit more low profile and chose clothes no one could recognize them in. Avon, who was already showing signs of stress, evidently didn't care. As for why Servalan and Avon never seemed to have these recoginition problems, that was just one of those extraordinary skills we expect in them. It's true Dayna never had this problem either, but she probably ran computer scenarios night and day on ways Servalan might try to keep Dayna from killing her and how to overcome them. Or maybe people in the B7 universe are actually more smell sensitive than we've realized and they relied on odor to ID people. Servalan changed her perfume. Since it was the perfume Avon had given her, he could still recognize her. Since the musk base came from something Dayna had killed, she could recognize her (perhaps they really did rescue Ensor's fish, which were actually the pollywog stage of those other critters and she'd been using that smell for their track and attack training, but they went down with the Liberator, messing up another perfectly good plan). > And why didn't Avon blow her cover? > He tried. Why wasn't Sleer recognised?

I'm new to this list, so this has probably been covered before. If so, please humour me! I think one of the worst mistakes in B7 was to bring back Servalan in the guise of Sleer (much as I enjoy Jacqueline Pearce's acting). Servalan must have been the most well-known person in the Federation, if not the whole galaxy. Her official portraits were doubtless everywhere, and she was probably on the viscasts almost every 'night' after becoming President. She wouldn't have been exactly retiring. I could buy the Sleer thing if they'd given her a different hair and dress style (like longer hair, tailored trouser suits), but she looks exactly the same. And even if it had become the fashion to resemble her (like the Diana craze years ago), it would be stupid to continue to do so after she had fallen so far from favour that all her colleagues were ruthlessly purged. Anyone have any explanations? Apart from poor script-writing? And why didn't Avon blow her cover? Nico *** This e-mail is privileged and confidential. I can't see that it would be different in the future. If she were still supreme commander, I could understand it, as ordinary people would have no idea what the top military people look like, going by how it is today. I'm down to one copy of 'Travis: the final act" audio tape. I'm also getting very low on Logic of Empire. There will be no more copies of the Travis tape.
