Good point. With my hypothetical "Pollux the genetically engineered"
story, I thought it quite possible that the Liberator might be
contacted occaisionally from a distance, allowing for a marginal
involvement of the crew.
Shall we say, any single recurring character can be used in 100% of the
story so long as they are dealing with original characters or a one-show
character. (Allowing for Travis and Parr going on a minesweep mission,
for instance). Any 2 character can be given a story together, provided
they interact no more than 25% of the total story _and_ have other
people to deal with. (Allowing, for example, Blake and Jenna to meet
again post Star One, but forcing a strong storyline for them as she
works with the Dyonast Smuggler's League only to discover they are
transporting arms to the Hurray For Blowing Things Up Rebellion which
Blake is allied with only until he can move to saner ground). Or, the
rebels can be presented as a team, but can show up for no more than 10%
of the story... useful for moving Surpercy's Squad from the planet where
Space Commander Chauvelain is tracking them down to an apparently
nuetral planet, but not enough for them to hog the spotlight when
Surpercy overhears the plot that will bring the nuetral planet under
Federation dominion.
Percentage would be determined by running a word count. Yes, you could
mess with my head by flashing from scene to scene so fast it's not worth
my while to count, but if you have a wonderful story idea which would go
above the percentages I've suggested, I'd prefer you just say, "Soolin
and Vila are together for 35% of the story, but there's an orphaned 12
year old who is really the focus... and I'll probably let it slide. One
of the key points, though is that Vila and Soolin probably aren't paired
that often, and the child is really important. If you create a Blake and
Avon story, and put in a bunch of other plot that really stands as
padding, I'll probably suggest it would go better pared down and put in
a zine dedicated to Blake and Avon fandoms. That said, I really respect
all of you too much to think you'd do that.
You could have a story 100% about Zen before Blake, etc found the ship,
or Servalan in the Academy... as long as you introduce new elements. Any
other questions? I love the idea of this zine, the more I think about
it. It's a wonderful chance to get new faces into the spotlight and
focus on untouched aspects.
