question about lock file

I wrote code : ====================================== int main() { Stdio.File f=Stdio.File("lockfile","cr"); object l=f->lock(); write("I lock the file"); sleep(8); return -1; } ======================================= I run this program in two processes,one after anthoer, the second process would write "I lock the file" after 8 secconds the first process start to run. But if i wrote ======================================= int main() { Stdio.File f=Stdio.File("lockfile","cr"); object l=f->lock(); write("I lock the file"); return -1; } ======================================= and run in two processes, one after anthoer, the second process would write "I lock the file" immediately after it started. I want to know why this happens, and why "return -1" is not work in this situation. I always think if I write "return -1" in the main(), the process will not quit and the file lock in the process will not destroy

GTK2

Hi, I'd like to use GTK+-2.x with Pike, but besides GTK2 not working with Pike there are some design flaws in the current implementation (as long as I read the source the right way). It seems that you can only use 1.2 or 2.x because there's only one GTK module. This is no problem within one program, but you have to decide when compiling Pike. In GTK 1.2 there are some identifiers that are missing in GTK 2.x and in the 2.x tree there are more widgets than in 1.2 so if a user would use Pike programs using 1.2 and 2.x he/she would need two different builds of Pike. There should be a clean distinction between GTK implementations, that's why I would suggest having an own module for GTK2. Any comments or aspects I may have overlooked? I already started implementing GTK2 as it's own module and got to the point where I can show a window with a label in it. I just wanted to ask if this makes sense or if anyone has already done this before I get to the real work. - Sebastian

Hi, On my sparc-linux it seems pike segfaults. According to gdb the location of the problem is interpreted.c In the function: eval_instruction_low. Exact location is line 1317 in the file. Seems the if-routine generates the segfault.

I've been annoyed at the divergent and fragmented implementations of html_encode_string, http_decode_string, etc. in Pike for quite some time. This is what it looks like today, afaik: encode: decode: --------------------------------------------------- html | _Roxen.html_encode_string Protocols.HTTP.unentity (partial) http | Protocols.HTTP.http_encode_string _Roxen.http_decode_string xml | - - Where should we put these methods instead? Standards.{HTTP,HTML,XML}? Somewhere else?

Change that to Roxen.http_encode_url in the yet unreleased 4.1. The one in 4.0 doesn't handle eight bit chars correctly. (Hmm, wonder why I haven't backported it..)

on the subject of segfaults

hi, the following was reported on irc. this code causes a segfault on pike 7.6: void main() { object data = Web.RDF()->parse_xml(Stdio.read_file("data.xml")); array link_temp = map(indices(data->get_subject_map()),"get_uri"); //array link_temp = indices(data->get_subject_map())->get_uri; } what is interresting to note is that using the commented line instead, no segfault happens. should those two lines not be compiled to the same? the segfault appeas to happen while the function that contains these lines, returns. (in this case when main() returns) data.xml is attached. greetings, martin.

filesystem_stat issue (Linux, 2.6 kernel)

fileystem_stat is not working correctly with NFS filesystems under Linux (at least kernel v2.6, glibc 2.3.4). Specifically block size is not correct. In my case I get blocksize 4096 while in actuality the block size is 32768. The 4096 is, according to the Linux statvfs manual page, the fragment size. I don't know if this is a Linux specific issue, but it might be (google says this field is "fundamental block size" in various UNIX flavors, but it's unclear to me what that means).
