Okay, this is Pat Nussman's fault... I think...
I have been asked "Who are the Thane and Bruce?" as a result of the following section of the Lyst Culture Guide:
Quote:
-------------------- Not a terribly active group these days, but Pat Nussman founded "AWG" -- Avon Without Guilt. As in, yes, we *know* it's terribly common; we *know* that more discerning tastes move on from their first attraction to the Dark and Snarly One in favor of the more arcane delights of, oh, The Thane and Bruce; we *know* he has a less than stellar character. So what? We still love him, and we refuse to be guilty about it. --------------------
I do not know the answer. I disclaim -- I was merely quoting what the AWG representative, er, represented unto me...
So, who are they?
Kathryn Andersen -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Blake: You took a big risk there, Gan. Gan: I thought it might save time. Besides, I needed a pacemaker. Vila: Me, too. Implanted in me heart. (Blake's 7: Pressure Point [B5])

Well, the AWG quote is something I wrote, and I think what must have happened was that I was too careless in letting the spellcheck have its way. :-( That ought to have been, The Thaarn and Bruce. (Bruce being the lyst's most common name for the spider in Harvest of Kairos.)
I was just groping for a couple of totally unlikely BSOs to contrast with Avon. Sorry for the confusion.

To the best of my knowledge, that triumph of SFX is known as Brian the Spider.
Okay, who's got their copy of "The Inside Story" handy?

p 54, Sheelagh's Sector: "I mentally named the creature Brian, working on the principle that anything with a name couldn't really be terrifying."

I *like* the apparently Scottish references. I vote we leave it as it is
Only if we can add "Andrew the Caddie".

And here I thought it was some obscure literary reference, like, er, something from Shakespeare or History (Thane being, of course, an Anglo-Saxony kind of Noble). This is almost a let-down...
Of course, we could then start wondering whether the author of Dawn of the Gods was unconciously thinking of Thanes when he decided on Thaarn...
Kathryn Andersen -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Avon: Have you found what you want? Blake: No. Avon: That's because you're looking for the wrong things. Blake: What exactly does that mean? Avon: It's a common enough failing. (Blake's 7: Redemption [B1])

Thought that was Brian... Anyway, I *like* the apparently Scottish references. I vote we leave it as it is:-)

Being MSWG not AWG, I merely suggest that the Thane would usually signify Macbeth; this makes me think of Bruce as Scottish rather than Australian, though I can't say I'm aware of the Bruce having an Avonic personality cult.
