etymology of 'Vila'

Sorry: this is a really trivial post. Do you remember there was a bit of discussion a while back about whether 'Vila' were Slavic nymphs? I'm reading Harry Potter to my daughter, and I was pleased to see that nymphs called 'Veela' are the cheerleaders for the Bulgarian international quidditch team. 'All that mattered in the world was that he kept watching the Veela.' That's what we say in Birmingham too. Alison

I'm actually sort of surprised that Blake wasn't more worried about being sold out by Vila. I'm sure Vila was grateful for being rescued from Cygnus Alpha, but I wonder if the thought of exchanging Blake and the Liberator for a pardon (after all, he isn't a particularly important villain, just a chronic one) didn't cross his mind more than a few times. -(Y) "Reality is only a dangerous concept if you have to rely on it"

It might have - fleetingly and guiltily - but he wouldn't act on it unless forced to by an *immediate* threat (like Travis holding a gun on him). Vila is softly selfish and very self-centred: under pressure he'll consider abandoning a crewmate (he thinks about leaving Blake in Trial, and wants to ditch Tarrant in Traitor) but he's anything but cold-blooded about it. Travis massacred civilians, and if Blake had killed him on Centero or Aristo (OK, not in 'Duel' as it was a test) then things would have been a lot better for the rebels. Yes, I know it's not in Blake's character, but he's a better person than me, Gunga Din. Vila was 'adjusted' more than once, presumably suffering as much as Blake did, and Shrinker was a torturer he may even have encountered. I'd do the same. I don't think Vila would have pulled the trigger on Shrinker if he had the chance though; OTOH I might in his place! As a really cruel punishment? I've finished a story I'm putting on my site soon in which Gan begs them to kill him after the death of his woman and the guard who killed her--he thinks later that's why they left him alive and unable to kill again--including probably himself (he's considering suicide and wonders if the limiter would prevent it). It still seems odd though - you'd think they'd install it and then hope to have a useful tame member of society to exploit afterwards.
