Thanks to all for the replies. However, if you don't know you've been mind-wiped until after the mind-wipe fails, you might present a vivid counter-example to others, but YOU aren't suffering. Considering the Federation's opinion of rebellion, I'd think they'd a) make sure that the conditioning DIDN'T break down [I know, then there's no series, but still] and b) make sure that the convicted rebel knew damn well what had happened to him/her and his/her family. -(Y)

I think it's a good idea not to tell Blake his family has been killed as a punishment for his crimes. Not matter how they might have convinced him through brainwashing he'd been misguided, the moment he knew his family-- nonviolent (presumably) civilians-- had been executed because the statedisapproved of his actiivities, he knows he was justified after all. Presumably Servalan and Travis aren't up to their eyeballs in suppressants (it's really scary to think that they're heavily medicated and would be more... extreme...otherwise). The Way Back implies that Blake has been getting forged tapes from his brother and sister, who actually are dead. Wouldn't the lie, if any, go in the other direction? At that stage, Blake is a convicted and supposedly rehabilitated rebel and traitor. Wouldn't The Powers that Be want him to feel a constant sense of guilt for getting his family killed (whether or not this had actually happened) instead of wanting him to think that his family were still alive off-world?
