OK, well obviously I'm only talking about what sounds plausible in a story.
But the idea is that you can imitate a more earth-like environment, so you
don't have to invent technological fixes for helping people overcome
non-earthlikeness. An example would be that you can have ordinary windows
that look out at a static view, instead of having to invent the kind of
static-projection system that Harriet mentioned.
Or you could keep atmosphere cooped around an asteroid, like in 'the little
prince', and even make it pop around where you want, which is a very
low-tech sort of space ship, with chickens living on it or whatever.
