OK, well obviously I'm only talking about what sounds plausible in a story. But the idea is that you can imitate a more earth-like environment, so you don't have to invent technological fixes for helping people overcome non-earthlikeness. An example would be that you can have ordinary windows that look out at a static view, instead of having to invent the kind of static-projection system that Harriet mentioned. Or you could keep atmosphere cooped around an asteroid, like in 'the little prince', and even make it pop around where you want, which is a very low-tech sort of space ship, with chickens living on it or whatever. How Green Was My Valley

I just got my tape of How Green Was My Valley and have watched the first episode now. If I'm any judge, Joyce is going to be in raptures when she sees her copy. Not only does it have a young Gareth, slim and bearded, but it's a damn good drama. This dates from the days when the BBC knew how to let a story tell itself. It's slow-paced and very well acted. The sets are few in number, but you tend not to notice because it's the characters who carry the story. It's set in a Welsh mining village and I suspect some Americans may well have trouble following the Welsh accents, especially in scenes set in and around the mines, but the domestic scenes are be pretty easy to follow. When in doubt, follow the music of the voices - Welsh accents do tend to sound wonderfully lyrical. You get your ear attuned after a while and then the accents become easier. It's the story of a Welsh mining family, especially the youngest son who was injured and unable to walk for several years. The family become close friends with the new preacher, played by Gareth, and events play out against the background of the chapel and the hypocracy of the elders. If the other episodes are as good as the first, then it'll be well worth it. One other point I thought of when answering Natasa's essay, was something that I have noticed both in my own writing (what little there is) and others ... how very *very* difficult it is to imagine most of these people carrying on a simple, non-rebellion-or-survival-or-some-such-plotty-thing conversation. I mean, just think about the nine of them in the various groups that got flung together ... what the *hell* did they all find to talk about with each other when we and Zen-cam weren't there to watch?!?!? There must be *hours* and *hours* and *days* when the Revolution/Federation/etc is on the virtual back-burner, and they all have to drop into the normal interaction of people who *live together* for years. For instance (and all IMO, obviously) Avon and Blake aren't too hard, they do share a similar background, have the nearest intellectual compatibility and a shared enjoyment in 'the verbal arts' - but while I do see Blake and Vila as drinking companions, it is *not at all* easy to think of what they'd talk about while drinking. Dayna and Soolin seem to have an almost girlfriend-y relationship at times (okay, breif and fleeting times, but it's there) and Avon and Vila have their pretend-slanging-match thing that they fall into so easily that one suspects it's almost unconscious (they also have common interests - money, for one, and how to get it non-legally). But what on *earth* might Cally and Jenna, or Cally and Tarrant, or Gan and Avon, or Dayna and Vila, find to talk about on the off-hours? Hi, You may find that the view is a fixed projection, rather than a window. None of the ships ever had a real window, but always a projection in some way, on a view screen. You couldnt afterall have the surpreme comander, president. etc. at risk from a bit of broken glass and the valcum of space. If the view was in motion rather than static, it may have caused space sickness, and im not sure she woudl like vomit on her floor, in that pretty white room. regards tony
