Voice From the Past ...

I thought more about this after reading Lisa's post promising the screen captues for this and Animals. Yes, okay, there's a lot of things bad about it. Thinking about it, however, I've realised that what bugs me most - that keeps me fretting at the edges of this one - is what it's not, rather than what it is. The possibilities lost to the godawful writing could have been wonderful; taken perhaps over two episodes we could have had: - a *real* look at a part of Federation politics largely, and Blake and his people getting involved with dissenters in positions of some power; and possibly - had it been written to give the whole thing a possibility of success - far more impact when it crashed; - the ambiguous murkiness of collaborators/dissenters in the person of Ven Glyn, another possible Anna Grant, albeit with the ambition to be Eminence Grise rather than President: playing a dirty game with Blake for motives that do (or don't?) put him on the side of the more grubby angels; - a deeper and more profound look at the impact of Blake's mindrape and its hidden, unsuspected, ongoing danger and damage; also what the shattering knowledge that he's still being controlled and abused could do to him, the way it could impact on his relationships with his crew (especially Avon, yes, well, what do you expect from moi?) and perhaps a look at the way he could fight back again - and the way he *must* have been damaged by it as he heads into the biggest fight of his life. Given the promise of the original ideas, Voice from the Past *should* have been up there with Star One, City and Blake. Instead, it's right down there with Kairos, Dawn and Ultraworld, saved only by the scraps of the political theme that should have been so much more, and (for those of us who like it<g>) the Blake and Avon and even Cally bits. But, being essentially frivolous, I still like it. Most of it. I vote for spacefall, because it has the first images of Avon. All those years ago I was attracted to the series because the first two episodes were so different from what I was used to. Watching The Way Back I was waiting for the happy ending right up to the very last minute, and it was something of a shock when things didn't come right for Blake at the last moment. Frame capture votes

I'm uploading this week's frame capture update at the moment. It's going to be reruns again this time, I'm afraid, due to Real Life having been extremely hectic lately. However, I am now off work through the end of the year, which means, among other things, that I should have a lot more time to do frame captures. I'm hoping to put together a bonus edition for the next update, which should coincide nicely with the 20th anniversary of the show's finale. What all this is leading up to: I've got two more episodes ("Voice From The Past" and "Animals") left to go from our last vote, and I would like to get the next set lined up so that I'll be ready to do some additional ones if possible. So, it's voting time again! Most of you know the drill. This time, I've got five slots to fill; these five will complete the 13 episodes which will appear on the next CD-ROM volume. Each of you may cast five votes, and you may portion them out however you wish -- you can give one vote each to five different episodes, or allot multiple votes to episodes you especially wish to promote. *Happy* Anniversary?

Wandering through Judith's website, I noticed a little fact that I think we should all commemorate. In just over 5 weeks, it will be exactly twenty years since the BBC gave us all *that* little Christmas present ... on 21 December, it will be the anniversary of the most vividily remembered, endlessly argued over and utterly memorable episode of Blake's 7: 'Blake'. Shouldn't we do something in memory? Hold a wake? Work out once and for all <veg> who made it through the shooting party? Have a 'most creative or unlikely PGP' competition? Or just weep into our virtual glasses in salute? Gareth in London on Monday

This just in from Horizon. If you're in or around London on Monday, it could be worth a visit. ('Dear Brutus' was a superb play) NEW: GARETH THOMAS, play reading in London, this Monday 19th November - lunchtime. Gareth will be making a flying visit to London on Monday 19th November doing a play reading Upstairs at The Gatehouse (Pub/Theatre), Highgate (Junction of Hampstead Lane & North Road), North London.) The performance begins at 12.30pm - the play is 'The Last Moons' by Furial Bordon (or some similar spelling!!), adapted by William Weaver. Director is David Newman (who was Assistant Director at Nottingham last year when Gareth starred in 'Dear Brutus' and 'Midsummer Night's Dream'. The play is being put on as part of a 2 week programme by John Caird/the Trevor Nunn group, to promote an awareness of new writers and directors. 'The Last Moons' is on at 12.30pm, tickets are £5 (£3 conc). Gareth says Act 2 is him doing a monologue.
