New revision control system

As most of you know we have been trying to switch revision control system since... forever. First to Subversion, but when that was almost finalized the shouts for DVCS got to loud and time was spent arguing the pros and cons of SVN vs Mercurial vs git. git won out quite some time ago, and the switch will be done on Sunday. If you have outstanding changes and don't want to manually patch them into git you should check them in before Friday 1800 CEST. After that CVS will be switched to read-only mode. As currently with CVS the entire git repository will be writable for everyone and is accessed via the same ssh keys used against pelix. More details on that in a separate mail later this week. Or I guess we _could_ modify the "constant()" cpp function so that it returns an actual value rather than just 1/0, but that would probably cause compatibility problems...

GTK2.TextBuffer

I find the "len" parameter to some functions in GTK2.TextBuffer rather puzzling. set_text("abcdefghij", 7) - gives 7 characters in the buffer set_text("äbcdefghij", 7) - gives just 6 characters set_text("\u1d8fbcdefghij", 7) - down to 5 characters This seems like complete nonsense. Why do we require the parameter in the first place?

That is something different. That is for when you build a c, c++, or ada project by going to Project->Build. It outputs a bunch of files. In the src directory there is a file called interface.c that has the code for connecting the signal. If you look in interface.c, you will see this in there somewhere: g_signal_connect_swapped ((gpointer) Home, "clicked", G_CALLBACK (Change_Location), GTK_OBJECT (Home)); That is the callback. That is something completely different from signal_autoconnect(). That is a pike function that calls glade_xml_signal_autoconnect_full(GLADE_XML(THIS->obj),pgtk2__signal_connect,&args); which itself ends up calling pgtk2__signal_connect (in GTK2/source/gladexml.pre), which itself calls g_signal-connect_data with the pgtk2_signal_func_wrapper (standard pike/GTK2 signal function) with the pike callback and the args (the passed in object from signal_autoconnect()). Since the code is a little different, what I would do would be to create a mapping with a bunch of data to be used by multiple callbacks. Then you can say match the object with a key in the mapping for data to pass to the signal. I should add set_data() and get_data() to gobject (in the inheritance tree of all the widgets) so we could attach arbitrary data to gtk2 objects. It could be used to get around this problem. I think there may have been a bug in function where I didn't increment some list pointer in the get_children() function. You may have the buggy one still. You might have to get the latest cvs version. My code is latest cvs as of a few days ago. Per the log for gtkcontainer.pre (where the bug exists) it was fixed in 7.8.396, so you definitely have the buggy version. You should update to the latest cvs version: http://pike.ida.liu.se/generated/pikefarm/packages/7.8/latest

GTK2 Label set_text

Hi, Wouldn't it be more convenient if the gtk2 widgets which receive string text have an automated sprintf inside? e.g. GTK2.Label()->set_text() now only takes a string. Best regards, Marc

svalue problem

But when the callback is actually called (show_bam_menu()), filedat is still "this is a string), rather than what I set filedat to in file_open_menu(). I put debug statements in the relevant code (GTK2/source/gtkactiongroup.pre), and it shows that the arg is still the previous value, not what I set it to. It seems that when I originally set up the callback... Hmm, I now see why, I did assign_svalue_no_free(). I don't want to get get a copy of the svalue, I actually want to reference the svalue. Or, if needed, get an indirect reference that I can deal with in the c-code to put the current, proper value in at the time. I hope I am clear. Does anybody have an idea of what I need to do? Maybe save a reference to the proper svalue, and not a copy, and indirectly reference it later? Although I'm not sure how I would do that. Maybe use a name of a variable in the menu_actions above, have the code do a lookup on the name at the time of the callback, and get the current value instead? -lsd

System.Inotify

I merged the Public.System.Inotify module into pike as System.Inotify. Its currently only in my git. You can fetch the branch called 'inotify' at http://laramies.com/git/pike/ I would like to commit this into cvs. However, it seems to me that the current policy is not to commit anything new until 7.9 is there? Also, right now it is seperate from the dnotify in Stdio. The inotify api is different from dnotify, so it might not be possible to merge that. All comments on the code welcome. arne

sqlite bug on Windows?

Hi! Pike programs (pike version 7.8.316) crash on Windows if I use sql insert with the builtin sqlite module (on Linux there is no problem). Maybe it is a bug? Cheers: Tamás
