But since "/" is already used in branch names in the new pike repo, a different separator char is probably better. ":", perhaps.

Looking at the pike-librarian for last friday, I see .gitignore being fixed for the whitespace problem in 8 branches. So I would have expected to see 8 commits. But instead I see a 8 commits, and 14 merges. This looks cluttered and bizarre to me. Why weren't the fixes simply done on one branch and then cherry-picked to the others, instead of this self-indulging juggling with merges?

Reminder: Pike Conference in Berlin in 2 weeks

Sorry for any potential duplication of recipients... This is just a friendly reminder about the rapidly approaching conference in Berlin, 18-19 October. I'm told that there have been some registrations, but oddly (sadly?), none from the Pike homeland of Sweden. I hope the short notice hasn't prevented too many folks from attending; it's always interesting to catch up and hear about all of the latest pike projects face-to-face, even if it's just a day. I know I'll be in town from Sunday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon, as will a few others. Switching to git and 7.9 news

Good news everyone! At long last grubba has returned from his excursions into the land of commit graph archeology and brings back with him the complete and unified Pike history in one git repository. Marcus has been sacrificing copious amounts of defenceless computrons on the operation of verifying that the completed repository looks correct and has now provided his seal of approval. The switch from CVS to git is thus now completed. The instructions for cloning your very own copy of the pike repository are available here: http://pike.ida.liu.se/development/git/rw-git.xml To avoid the wrath of your fellow developers, please read the instructions carefully, and get a new enough git binary before checking out! In other news, Pike 7.9 is now open for commits and is the default branch. Enjoy! -- Peter Bortas

Grubba and Marcus has spent an enourmous amount of time fixing details like that in the real conversion, so chances are yes. What is currently seen in the viewer has little resemblence of what will show up there on sunday when grubbas tool is run on it*. New revision control system

As most of you know we have been trying to switch revision control system since... forever. First to Subversion, but when that was almost finalized the shouts for DVCS got to loud and time was spent arguing the pros and cons of SVN vs Mercurial vs git. git won out quite some time ago, and the switch will be done on Sunday. If you have outstanding changes and don't want to manually patch them into git you should check them in before Friday 1800 CEST. After that CVS will be switched to read-only mode. As currently with CVS the entire git repository will be writable for everyone and is accessed via the same ssh keys used against pelix. More details on that in a separate mail later this week. Or I guess we _could_ modify the "constant()" cpp function so that it returns an actual value rather than just 1/0, but that would probably cause compatibility problems...

GTK2.TextBuffer

I find the "len" parameter to some functions in GTK2.TextBuffer rather puzzling. set_text("abcdefghij", 7) - gives 7 characters in the buffer set_text("äbcdefghij", 7) - gives just 6 characters set_text("\u1d8fbcdefghij", 7) - down to 5 characters This seems like complete nonsense. Why do we require the parameter in the first place?

That is something different. That is for when you build a c, c++, or ada project by going to Project->Build. It outputs a bunch of files. In the src directory there is a file called interface.c that has the code for connecting the signal. If you look in interface.c, you will see this in there somewhere: g_signal_connect_swapped ((gpointer) Home, "clicked", G_CALLBACK (Change_Location), GTK_OBJECT (Home)); That is the callback. That is something completely different from signal_autoconnect(). That is a pike function that calls glade_xml_signal_autoconnect_full(GLADE_XML(THIS->obj),pgtk2__signal_connect,&args); which itself ends up calling pgtk2__signal_connect (in GTK2/source/gladexml.pre), which itself calls g_signal-connect_data with the pgtk2_signal_func_wrapper (standard pike/GTK2 signal function) with the pike callback and the args (the passed in object from signal_autoconnect()). Since the code is a little different, what I would do would be to create a mapping with a bunch of data to be used by multiple callbacks. Then you can say match the object with a key in the mapping for data to pass to the signal. I should add set_data() and get_data() to gobject (in the inheritance tree of all the widgets) so we could attach arbitrary data to gtk2 objects. It could be used to get around this problem.
