TCP/IP, 2nd exam

If you are have already passed the exam or you are not interestede in taking the exam, please ignore this e-mail. The second (and last) exam for the TCP/IP course will be on January 25:th, 8-12. This hardware accelerator can reduce the load on the main CPU in an IPv4 host attached to an Ethernet LAN. The static timing analysis show that the accelerator could be used even in 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The ARP entity cache consists of at most 8 entries. An aging mechanism has been implemented. TCP interprets these losses as congestion and invokes congestion control mechanisms which in turn degrade the performance. in this paper we discuss about the performance degradion of TCP in wireless and mobile networks and some proposed schemes to improve TCP performance. The fact that it is possible to route traditional calls over IP networks by using gateways is a reality now. Both the ITU and the IETF are involved in the standardization, and their protocols are competing to become the de facto standard. The paper give an overview about important issues that are involve in Voice communication over IP networks. The paper structure is presented in the following. In the first section an introduction is given to reveal today status of voice transmission using IP Networks. The second section decribe 3 application in order to show the usability of this technique. The third section give a more detailed description of the voice over packet networks architecture. The fourth section describe briefly the protocols involve in Voice over IP and give a comparation between SIP and H.323. The fifth section deal with QoS in Voice Over IP applications. The last section give some conclusions regard voice application in IP based Networks. The server, which supports a small part of the NFS v2, allows you to mount a directory structure, and to read files and directories.

The seminars for extra credit in the TCP/IP course are scheduled as follows: 1) Dec 12, 9-12 in "G-Huset, sal G33, Plan 3" 2) Dec 15, 9-12 in "Estraden, E-Huset, Plan 2" If you intend to get the extra credits you will: o) Send a mail to me as soon as possible (= this week) with: -) Type (paper or implementation project) -) The final title of your paper/implementation project -) Short abstract (5-10 sentences about the paper/project) -) Info on whether Dec 12 is suitable for you -) Info on whether Dec 15 is suitable for you o) Send your term paper (or, if you are doing an implementation project: a short description of your work and your results, together with relevant source code or the equivalent) to me by email. It should be in my mailbox on or before noon December 8. The format should be something I can read/print easily. Plain text, Postscript, PDF or DVI are OK; Word or Framemaker documents are not. o) Attend "your own" seminar to present your paper or projekt (giving a short talk and answering questions). o) Attend the other seminar too, if possible. Since some of you may not be coming to the seminars, etc., I would like to take the opportunity for us all to thank Kent for an excellent job in teaching the subject! In essence, it is shown that it is possible to provide fine-grained, scalable security to applications and allow them to select at runtime the required amount of processing overhead necessary to achieve sufficient security. This vision is realized through a design abstraction called 'Virtual Enterprise Networking', or short Supernets. A first prototype of such a Supernet has been implemented on Linux. The talk describes vision and properties of Supernets, and then outlines the different components of the implemented architecture. This covers the security mechanisms behind Supernets, the address translation mechanisms, and the Linux kernel modifications to achieve, among others, sandboxing properties. Some aspects of secure storage are also explored. About the speaker: - ----------------------- Germano Caronni (IEEE/ACM) received his PhD in Computer Science from ETH Zuerich. Germano was one of the first to invent a process to watermark images, participated in the IETF (IPSEC), led the independent implementation effort for SKIP (secure TCP/IP) and its integration into an adaptive firewall. In 1997, he won the RC5/48 challenge of RSA DSI. Since late 1997, Germano has been with Sun Microsystems, where he has introduced a novel solution to secure multicasting, worked on authentication frameworks, and participated in the design of an overall security architecture for Suns' products.
