Since a _huge_ number of physical trauma victims suffer partial amnesia, often unable to remember events for hours, days, even weeks or months leading up to the accident, what if Blake survived and had no memory of Avon shooting him?
Come to think of it, what if Avon was also injured and didn't remember it?
And suppose Vila survived by ducking, wasn't injured, and tried to convince them that's what happened?
Vila: Really, Avon. You shot Blake.
Avon: _Why_ would I shoot Blake?
Vila: You thought he'd betrayed you.
Avon: I thought _what_?
Vila: Well, you thought he'd sold us to the Federation.
Avon: I thought _Blake_ sold _us_ to the Federation? _Why_ would anyone believe anything like that?
Then, suppose they rescued the others, who had also suffered physical trauma and who also didn't believe Vila. They'd probably wind up believing someone had been tampering with Vila's brain (or that he'd been _very_ drunk - or maybe too sober and having DTs?).

Vila: Tarrant told you he had. He got confused.
Avon <rolls eyes>: Oh, well *that* explains it.
