As per Helen's post - yes I agree, he would have said this at any point. I've been thinking about this since I posted it and dont think I explained myself very well - the trouble with posting after a long shift. I do think he is being defiant and standing up for his rights - my interpretation of his suicidel/ depression is at this point it is very subliminal. Totally me reading into this, but I see it as him realising afterwards perhaps that he really did mean it, that he wants to take a break, or possibly more serious. Then slowly his mood and attitude chamging. Then what with the false Blake encounter and Cally's death, i think it was 5 straws after the one that broke the camels back.
I didnt know about the 'cannon', but I have to say I disagree, I dont think Avon knew Cally would not let him die. He might suspect, but after Anna and his lack of trust anyway - to trust a Cally taken over by an alien, her track record isnt very good. I think at that point he believed he could be killed.

Just to settle this one by reference to external factors - Tanith Lee has stated in an interview that she saw Avon as walking death wish. (No, I don't have access to the interview at the moment - I did transcribe it a few years ago, but I have enough respect for copyright not to put it up for public access and I don't have access to my files at the moment.)

As for respect for copyrights--US copyright law permits "fair use," and the very first examples given are "criticism, comment, news reporting." Non-commercial use of a reasonable portion of a copyrighted work in a context like this would therefore almost certainly be considered a non- infringing fair use.

Yup, but putting up the entire interview wouldn't be. I don't currently have access to my own copy, and I've never put the complete text in a public place, including this list, so I can't go and pull it off from anywhere on the net. Maybe one of the Citizens has a copy on file and can find the relevant quote. I *did* post it to The Other List, as I felt that posting it to an unarchived, closed list that was busy deconstructing Tanith Lee scripts at the time constituted fair use.
