Well, it's Tarrant, that counts as at least an extenuating circumstance

My favorite thing about this is that Cally is plainly furious at *Tarrant* for almost getting shot.

I agree with Ellynne, probably after they were boarded ('Bounty', maybe). Or even as early as 'The Web', when Cally turns nasty. He was probably kicking himself he hadn't thought of it earlier, but then, you live and learn.
