Kill the Dead is copyright 1980, Sand was first broadcast late 1981.

And how long a delay between when Sand was *written* and when it was broadcast?

Apparently none of the cast or crew were aware that there was going to be a fourth series until the BBC continuity announcer said so over the closing credits of Terminal. Which suggests that none of the scripts had been commissioned at that point.
Kathryn asked Steve:

According to the Marvel Winter Special, Tanith Lee was commissioned to write Sand in "early 1981". It was shot in July (Virn exteriors) and August (studio stuff) for broadcast in November 1981.
She was approached to write Sarcophagus in 1979 - even less specific - but it was shot in November 1979 and January 1980 (for broadcast in March).

Ah. So Kill The Dead was probably influenced by Sarcophagus! But I have a feeling that Companions on the Road was written before then.
Kathryn Andersen -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Charl of the Lord Tharn: How tall is Orac? Tarrant: About so high. Charl of the Lord Tharn: A dwarf! What colour is his hair? Tarrant: He has no hair. Charl of the Lord Tharn: He's bald? Tarrant: A bald-headed dwarf shouldn't be difficult to find. (Blake's 7: Dawn of the Gods [C4])

1975, I think, but definitely before B7 started.
And when I referred to never having seen a copy of the Daw edition of KtD, I was talking about in that particular second-hand shop. Those who wish to buy online can usually find several copies to choose from. Incidentally, the cover art is available as postcards, and the resemblance of the Parl Dro character to Paul Darrow as depicted in the cover art is a complete coincidence.
