I disagree that Avon was a winner in Rumours of Death. He thought at the beginning of the episode that someone had been willing to die under torture rather than turn him in. At the end, he realised he had never been loved at all. This obviously had a severe impact on his view of himself (ie unloveable) and of other people (there are no exceptions, no one is trustworthy).
