I came away with a bad taste in my mouth because they didn't get into explanations and tolerence; it was more like "Make yourself more likeable to other people by being what they expect".

Tying this into Blake's 7, perhaps the reason for "Avon apologists" is that we feel that the majority of people will condemn him on the basis of likeability alone, and blind themselves to Blake's occaisional manipulation because he is 'warmer'.
