A UK actor (born in London to Irish and Welsh parents), best known to American audiences for such roles as Hans Gruber (Die Hard), the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), Sir Alexander Dane/Dr. Lazarus (Galaxy Quest). He will shortly be seen as Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter movie.

My favorite of the roles I've seen him in are the the male lead in Truly, Madly, Deeply, along with the aforementioned Hans Gruber. He also gives IMHO an amazing performance in Closet Land (the cast consisting of only him and one actress, IIRC), but I found the movie too emotionally brutal to watch more than once, unfortunately.

Empire magazine has chosen him in 1997 as #59 in "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time", and in 1995 as (I'm surprised here) #34 in the top 100 sexiest stars in film history.
