I think mums worrying about some unlikely accident befalling their offspring is a common enough cliche, I'm not sure about falling down a cliff specifically.
I remember my mum being constantly wibbling that I could be 'dead under a bus' quite a lot if I didn't call when I was supposed to.
With me it was always 'dead at the bottom of a cliff'. It was a joke between me and my sister. And very usable too in the B7 universe with all their cliffs and quarries; you'd have to replace your bus with something else. ;-)
Though my mother did have a thing about wearing fresh underwear 'in case you're run over by a bus'. There must be something about buses. Anyway, Vila's mum is definitely based on mine, with her worries and attitudes and some expressions, though I think she's a little too Jewish at times to fit B7; I'll have to check for that. I think there's a very non-B7 'already' in there somewhere. She's also nicer to Vila and a lot less critical than my mother - hey, he needs someone on his side!

Hmm yes. We don't see much ground transport in B7 do we?
What common accident's could mum's worry about? Teleport seems an obvious one but they're not common enough in the B7 world for that to be a cliche.

Course he does. <firm nod>

In TWB, Dev Tarrant suggests "transporter accident" as an explanation for the demise of Tel and Maja, in a weary tone that suggests that it's a cliche.

I always interpreted "transporter" in that line as "skiffy car-analogue vehicle". Certainly teleportation is exotic technology to Federation citizens, and the less said about TV series in which teleport devices are called "transporters" the better.
