Me either, to be perfectly honest. But Avon is acting awfully strange and, while choosing Vila isn't out of character, the way he does it certainly is.
Actually, I'm inclined to think his mind was being played with by off screen aliens (that strange being known as "Thedirector," perhaps). Although it would also make sense if this was one of those stories where the character lives most of the day backwards and Avon picks Vila because he knows he picked Vila and he's acting so strange because he already knows the ending . . . .
