I read this story some time back, and I have to say I liked it a lot. The ocf didn't strike me as too Mary-Sue-ish, she was handled very well, IMO. Mind you, I haven't come across many of that type of story to compare it with.
I particularly liked the way the widow's dog, which was her husbands ad only really tolerated her for his sake, attached itself to Avon, and the way he pretended not to care and then fondled it under cover of the table.
