<returning after a rl-driven break, and carefully deleting everything Eudora has marked with multiple chillies>
Depends what you mean by fandom... While I love Harry Potter, for example, I wouldn't call myself a member of the fandom. I belong to hpfemmeslash becuase a friend owns the list, and I may one day get around to writing the Hermione/Fleur story I promised her, but the fandom doesn't appeal to me - too many teen girls who think Draco's thinly-metaphorical racism is sooooo kewl and *SEXY*!!!! <sparkly eyes> The only difference being whether they think his true love is Harry, Hermione or Mary Sue... I tend to stay well away. :)
And there's plenty of things I adore but kinda never got involved with on a fan level... Terry Pratchett, for one. :) Or Bad Girls.
So, working from actual involvement, fic writing, web site owning and so on... My major fandom for a while was DS9. I think the smiliarities with B7 are reasonably clear, although I have to admit a Cardassian fetish contributed... Of course, DS9 is overall more optimistic and more expensive, but it still has the same... feel... in a way.
But currently, I am passionately involved in Pokemon fandom. Team Rocket, not twerp fandom - yes, divisions are policed. <giggle> And while on the surface it couldn't be more different, I think it *is* a similar thing in some ways. Jesse and James are tacky over-the-top dressers, they graviate between desperate plans and half-hearted "Let's dig a hole and see if Pikachu falls in it," token efforts, they sometimes have little victories but overall, if they won, the show would be over... Maybe I just like stylish losers. And, of course, both shows have strong female characters and a fabulous sense of camp. And have cheap special effects/animation. Also, I could compare Vila to James, Soolin to Jesse and Orac to Meowth, thus taking care of three of my favourite characters...
Of course, I also love Pokemon for the cute monsters. Harvest of Kairos, anyone?
