I like both of these ideas, a lot (and they could both be true, there could be a family history of troublemaking just like Ushton and Roj). Certainly beats my previous vague ideas that he was just a young small-time crook caught up at the fringes of something bigger and chosen to take the fall (but after all, he *is* natural-born cannon-fodder, isn't he?)
