On the subject of character identification, I suspect that age of encounter is important.
Characters encountered during early childhood are more likely to turn into role models, while those encountered during puberty are more likely to become sex symbols. Adults might have a more complex response, depending on whether their current circumstances left them in more need of role models, sex symbols or more-intellectual stimulation....
My guess as to the reasons for my personal long-term Avonic addiction would be inoculation aged 8 or so (first UK showing), followed by re-inoculation in my mid-teens (UK repeats).

Probably one could also add to what other 'points of interest' one is attracted - the Richard III connection has been mentioned previously.
