At times, I've wondered if the unique appeal doesn't come Avon being that rarity of rarities--an super intellectual with sex appeal. You can't point to many in popular media or fictional culture. The model of most Western heroes tends toward the physically courageous and tough who are willing to sacrifice.
Avon may show occasional hints of these, but they aren't his forte...at least that's the way it seemed to me.

For those of us who don't think of the killing retort and the snappy comeback until 3 a.m., he's the ideal we fall short of. ;-)
