If the frequency of the 'with him or be him' (him usually =Avon) posts on the Other List are anything to go by, an awful lot of female fans claim to identify with their preferred character, rather than lusting after him/her.

The two are not necessarily distinct processes though--for some people, lust is a matter of complementarity, for others finding someone as much like one'sself as possible--that is, either same- sex or other-sex object choice can have a narcissistic element too.
