oops yes, you are absolutely right. It was reflex to lump Britain in with Europe on this, just because I tend to on everything, but in fact I guess the traditions are quite different, in terms of film. TV I don't really know.

I'd put it down to BBC Radio, myself. As JMS wrote, if you can listen to a TV programme from the other room, and still know what's going on, that's not TV, that's radio. I'm sure theatre relies heavily on the visual, too, if only from the actors' body language and expressions.
