Well, guys, it looks like lots of sites are getting the ax, whether they contain fan related content or not. The only thing they all have in common is that they are "free" sites. People with "paid" sites are not being deleted. The Wall Street Journal reports that Lycos, the company that owns Tripod and Angelfire (and a host of other domains) is going *bankrupt*. At this point, it looks like they're simply purging server space in a frantic attempt to cut costs.
I know that I, for one, will be moving all of my photo sites off of Angelfire over the next week or so. This means that the Blakes 7 photo site will be moving again. Sigh. Stay tuned for the new URL when I know it.
Does anyone know any good places to purchase domain space?

Ah! Now that is the first explanation I've heard that makes sense.

Guess that depends on what you want in the way of a webhost (or are you talking domain name here?)
I use www.addr.com for my web-host ($7.95 US a month, 50 megs of space, full CGI and other nifty things), and www.gandi.net for my domain name ($12 Euro a year, free redirection to a given URL if you don't have a nameserver). (No, you don't have to have a domain name in order to use addr.com -- I just had a friend point me to gandi a couple of weeks ago, and I bought my domain name last Monday...)
That's actually one thing to keep in mind when looking for paid-for webspace; a lot of them expect you to have your own domain name.
Whatever you do, *don't* go to NoZone.net. I went to them because they were the cheapest I could find with what I wanted -- and I paid for it. They are completely incompetent. Don't waste your money.
A good site to go to is http://www.ispcheck.com -- that was how I found addr.com. They have a guide to web-hosts whom they check for "customer satisfaction"; that is, it's all very well offering a good deal, but if the service is crappy, then it's better not to waste one's time.

But not the correct one, as it turns out. Lycos is *not* in the throes of bankruptcy, nor has there been any report to that effect in the WSJ. And the following has now been released by Tripod:
