I mean, if I'd come on the list and said "I find issues of gender and sexuality in Deliverance, especially with regard to Avon's conduct in Meegat's presence, occasionally questionable," would anyone have responded at all?
I probably would have found that a *much* better and more interesting discussion than what we got, actually, but maybe that's just me...

Yes, and I would have been inclined to agree with "It's Questionable", rather than some statements that were actually made. It was questionable.

But would you, if it had gone that way? Neil has made several rational, intelligent posts lately on the subject of why he considers H/C to resemble S/M. Very few people have actually posted in to say "OK, Neil, I see your point," or "OK, Neil, but you're overlooking..." Either they haven't responded, or they've responded with categorical denials of the thesis of the debate which, as my old philosophy tutor used to say, is a non-starter. I didn't follow the earlier H/C discussion (deleted the posts when I saw the header) but I gather from what Neil said to Wendy that the same thing happened there.
As I've said before, I've made posts and gone away thinking "Oh dear, that was a little bit controversial of me..." and come back to find either nobody's responded or that they've picked up on the non-controversial aspects of my post for discussion and not the controversial ones.
