Replying to Nico:
I love the idea of Vila beginning every e-mail with "Hi, mum, I am not dead at the bottom of a cliff."
Further to that, in my story he does e-mail her after 'Rescue':
Dear Mum, No, I'm not dead at the bottom of a cliff, but I almost was.
And I have him fall down a cliff on Del Ten (under low gravity) and send her a photo of himself sprawled at the bottom (taken by Avon from the top). It's meant to allay her fears - "Hey, look, it happened finally and I'm all right!" - but of course makes them worse.
How common is this particular fear among mothers? I got it constantly from mine when I was overseas. Is it a standard mother cliche?

I think mum's worrying about some unlikely accident befalling their offspring is a common enough cliche, I'm not sure about falling down a cliff specifically.
I remember my mum being constantly wibbling that I could be 'dead under a bus' quite a lot if I didn't call when I was supposed to.
