I always assumed that force fields were different from force walls. In "City" Vila states that air can bleed through a force field, whereas the blister force wall mentioned by Slave in "Stardrive" would have to be airtight.

In general science fiction science has
a) agree with current scientific knowledge (eg viable/fryingable Venus - and Jules Verne's science fiction is in line with contemporary science)
b) consistent with the background of the series
c) be convenient for the particular story

Depends on how fast the air bleeds out. Vila and Kerril only had what they took with them, and it seemed to last a fair while. Slave's blister wall need only hold enough air for sufficient time to let Avon and Tarrant do the repairs.
