There are a few of this general genre that are quite plausible and readable. Offhand I'd recommend Julia Stamford's 'Frozen in Hell', in Forbidden Star 2, where the underground retreat is some sort of abandoned mining base, suitably cold and miserable, and the denoument is rather believable. As I recall, the story's gen, though the zine isn't.
