This is probably just me being warm and fuzzy and all, but I thought the mineral in the room was some kind of psychic amplifier or conductor (notice one of the two local civilizations-in-decay does have some psionic technology) and that the way Dorian used it was the result of both some minor (and possibly completely unnoticeable outside the cave) psionic ability and natural temperment - that he was already pretty heavily into using others (ran off with the money and framed his partners, never tipped, etc).

After all, he's the kind of guy who goes spelunking, finds out his spelunking partner's in trouble, that this trouble benefits him, and essentially cuts the rope. Then, when those benefits stop coming, he lures somebody else in. This didn't seem so much going down the slippery slope as already having arrived.

So, maybe if some of our merry band had tried, they would have found it worked in unexpected ways, assuming they had the talent to trigger it. Perhaps Vila would have suddenly learned the location of every bar anyone he brought in there knew about, that sort of thing.
