The question I find difficult to answer is...did Anna love Avon?
I agree, this one cannot be answered through canon - it can be speculated upon though - I'm going through all the Avon/Anna scenes in my head and I think the best place to start is with the final statement from Anna to Avon:
"I let you go...my love"
I have never looked at the possible meanings behind these words before - only Avon's response to them. However; if we look at it, as is, I have to wonder just what she actually meant by this and I can only conclude that she allowed him to go for the exit visas without shopping him to the federation as she should have done, then did a runner when he got caught, here is where I see holes though:
Point one: Anna Grant is also Bartolomew; one of central security's best agents. She would not be known to many, but somewhere in the upper echelon's of the federation there would be a dossier on her and Servalan certainly knew who she was, yet she said she ran to her husband - I don't think she would have been allowed to run anywhere if she had actually conspired with Avon as he believed ahe did. A change of name certainly would not protect her, therefore; I propose that she possibly was part of his actual downfall in the federation banking scam and was actually later reassigned - in case her cover had been blown by Avon.(as it happened, he never even considered the possibility and believed her dead).
which brings me to: Point two: Upon Avon saying "Hello Anna" Anna stiffens ever so briefly, before slowly turning to face Avon, this could be taken as shock at hearing the voice of her beloved, however; I see it more as shock from 'a ghost from the past' and the wheels turning very quickly in her mind as to how she is going to approach him - let me explain, my reasoning: After rapidly collecting herself, Anna says quietly to herself "Avon" She then turns and faces him and says to him: "Avon"(she then rushes over to him with arms outstretched) "Avon! Oh! I was afraid they'd kill you. I heard there was someone with Blake, but I didn't know for sure, and I didn't dare let myself hope."
This doesn't ring true at all - every man and his dog knows about Roj Blake, the Liberator and his crew, so we can be pretty sure that Councillor Chesku and his wife would know the names of the infamous Liberator crew.
Oh, Avon, Avon (brushes him a couple of times with light kisses)then: "Why didn't you come back for me?"
She participated in the plan to "kill off" Anna Grant and replace her with Sula Chesku(whether willingly or not is irrelevant) the fact remains that she must have known that Avon couldn't come back for her if he thought her dead, therefore; My belief is that all that she said and did was designed to throw Avon off his guard and when she saw that the reverse was happening she made a move to kill him. As she herself said: "I knew when you found out, you would kill me."
I think in her own way Anna had feelings for Avon, which is why she gave him leverage that she denied Chesku but as for love in the same sense that I believe Avon had for her...I would say, no.

I've always believed Avon was almost certain it was a trap.
Personally, I don't think so - Avon seemed very determined to get to Terminal, even to the point of not wanting to take the long way around that cloud of (whatever the heck that stuff was)I didn't originally understand his apparent need for haste, but I then assumed that he was given a set time frame in which to comply - He then set about following all instructions to the letter, this would be the act of anyone who believed in the possibility of the message being true, however; as I said, I do believe that he considered the possibility of it being a trap, which is why he went down alone and was at least cautious once he entered the underground base.

It's my personal belief that by this time Avon had discovered that the old saying, 'be careful what you wish for -- you may get," was all too true.
(chuckles) You could have a point there, he did somewhat balls up the leadership thing didn't he :-) Not really his cup of tea at all.

The one similarity that most struck me is that in both cases Avon emotionally shutdown.
Yes, he did - and a very good point. I truly believe that Avon had an emotional investment in both Anna and Blake - but they were different portfolios with different returns...forgive the silliness, the answer is sincere but I get these moments :-)
His feelings ran deep for both but on different levels. I personally do not see love as entering the A/B relationship at all.
===== Cheryl. (My favourite 'Blake's 7' moment) What a fiasco! We could take over the ship you said, if I did my bit. Well, I did my bit, and what happened? Your 'troops' bumble around looking for someone to surrender to, and when they've succeeded, You, follow suit! (Avon to Blake. "Spacefall")
