The plot is excellent, vintage Dr Who set in a universe that would look remarkably like our own, were it not for the presence of assorted aliens and monsters. In this case, the real-life inspiration is the maiden, and fatal, voyage of the airship R101 in 1930. None of the original crew are aboard the Who universe R101, but other details of her flight are historically accurate.
While it is undoubtedly a brilliant production in which Gareth Thomas has an absolute gift of a part, there is one gaping plot hole; namely the awkward fact that there were 6 *survivors* of the R101.
There is what I took to be an oblique reference to this in the story, when the Doctor urges Charley to go to a particular spot on the ship shortly before the time of the crash. I'd rather not go into more detail, as it might be a spoiler for the story.
If anyone's interested in finding out more about the R101, a good starting point is http://www.aht.ndirect.co.uk/airships/r101/index.html
