There's no evidence that there are no gay relationships within canon. Therefore depicting gay relationships is not against canon.
I'm not entirely sure I've read your post properly, but working through all those double negatives, I'd have to say that you're right. There _are_ gay relationships within canon. Just not involving the principal characters.
