I see a decided sexual, and otherwise, attraction

ambiguous-- he

seems to realize that she is incredibly dangerous-- see
Aftermath.
Avon is
- Attracted to her (both physically and to some
elements of her personality) 2) Also repulsed by some elements of her personality (some of them the same ones that attract him). 3) More accurately, there's this mingled loathing and respect 4) Flattered that she's attracted to him 5) Competitive - who's going to outsmart who (and who will be left standing when the dust clears).
Thanks, Elynne. You've summed up the ambiguity of the Avon-Servalan connection much better than I could. Although IMO I would add:
6) He sometimes uses her attraction to get what he wants (e.g. in Deathwatch)
