A was hearing about what were supposed to be some sample questions from an honesty test (supposedly a serious one, but I have my doubts). It occurred to me that Cally would probably flunk and Vila would pass with flying colors.
Example -
Interviewer: After returning home, you realize you have received one dollar extra in change. Do you return it?
Vila: Oh, absolutely [to himself: Never keep money you shouldn't have if you don't know where you got it. It could be a frame up].
Interviewer: You discover an employee has been stealing $500 a month from company funds. He says he needed it to get by but he won't do it anymore. Do you let him keep his job?
Cally: Certainly [to herself: Poor man! What kind of desperate situation was he in? Is someone in his family sick? Why didn't I know about it? What kind of wage is he getting if he needs to steal money to survive, and -]. By the way, how much is $500 in Auron pounds?
Interviewer: Do you consider yourself A) Unusually honest, B) About average, C) Somewhat dishonest, D) Very dishonest?
Vila: A [to himself: at least I admit I'm a thief. How many people do that?]
Cally: C [to self: I know I've told lies to Federation officers, and neutral traffic controllers, and members of the Terra Nostra, and interrogators when I was being tortured, and -]
[So help me, the next really was supposed to be on the list]
Interviewer: Do you ever hear voices in your mind telling you what to do? If so, do you ever listen to them?
Cally [hesitates]: You're not using that as a metaphore for conscience, are you?
Interviewer: No. Please, answer the question.
Cally: Er . . . .
