You're
never going to get all the members of the list to comply *unless it is a rule of the list*. Why continue to upset yourself (and other members of the list) by making an issue of it? You have options. Pick one.
At the risk of boring people, I would like to restate my position before I sign off on this topic. I speak for myself only and not for Neil or anyone else.
I do not have a problem with humourous posts, humour or wit (I mean heck, I write "The Posthumous Memoirs of Secretary Rontane," which is hardly a documentary). I have also never stated that I wanted to chat quietly in the corner (which fact Annie has kindly pointed out. Thanks, Annie).
The original dispute was not about humour on the Lyst in general, or even serious threads turning humourous, but about interjections in a different tone. Which I think has now been rectified, as a) people are now being more careful about changing thread headings, and b) it is now known to be a touchy issue and so I think (or hope, anyway) that people on both "sides" will be more careful not to tread on each other's toes too heavily in the future.
I'd like to point out, as a point of clarification, that when I debate things, I tend to come at it in a very academic style, which involves taking up a position and defending that position until it becomes untenable. Which, I have been reminded offlist by someone, is fine for academic debates, but can be taken as overly argumentative in other contexts. <slaps wrist repeatedly>
I have found nothing in this discussion to upset me; In fact, I rather enjoy being able to hear other people's views and to put my own into print form. However, as tempers are obviously fraying, I'm going to make this post my last word, and go and watch a few episodes of "The Clangers" for a while...
