This plot device for throwing characters together in forced interaction has been around since fanfic started. I remember reading several in STAR TREK zines in the early 70's...in fact, I read one in a new classic TREK fanzine I bought at Mediawest*Con this year, involving Christine Chapel and Spock. I distinctly remember being amused to see JMS use the idea in an episode of BABYLON 5, to force Londo and G'kar to interact.
