There was a recent Freedom City thread (suitable for all audiences-- don't worry!) about fanfic treatments of telepathy and empathy. Possibly Avon has some degree of clairvoyance ("I always thought his death and mine would be linked in some way") and he's trying to stand back from the carnage he senses in the future.
